Bayernwald

Bayernwald is located in de Voormezelestraat(street),on the right hand side from Wytschaete to Voormezele.You can register from 09.00 to 17.00 hour at the Tourist Office VVV Heuvelland Reningelststraat(street) 11 8950 Kemmel Phone:003257448999 Fax:003257450455.There you get a number code which gives access to the site.Group visits can be booked in advance at abive adress of via e-mail:toerisme@heuvelland.be.

On November 1914 gave the British,Irish,French and Bavarian soldiers a fierce battle,for the strategically located on a hill at Wytschaete lie of 40 metres height.The Germans captured this place and called this place Bayernwald.From 1914 to 1917 the Germans built up,the Bayernwald to a on-pregnable fortress.By september 1918 there are ten shelters originally consisting of two rooms with a clearance of 1,20 metres,constructed from precast concrete blocks dating from 1916.These provide shelter to 47 German men.There are now four more on in site.Also there were now two shafts wich are visible,Bertha 5 is 25 meters deep and not open.The existing structure base is 17 meters deep.There are trenches,which the substructure of the trench consist of a inverted A - frame,bearing gangways.The water is carried away underneath.The walls are frilmy anchored braiding in wicker. Shelters

The shelter all system consisting of two rooms and a clearance of 1.20 meters,as accommodations for the mens.Built up precast concrete blocks,they are from the summer 1916.By september 1918 there were originally ten shelters,place for 47 men.

The mine-shaft was originally 25 meters deep and not accissible,the existing structure you can see is 17 meters deep and protected.
